In the article, “What Does LatinX Mean?” the author talks
about intersectionality which is the overlapping of social categories such as
race, class, gender that applies to a certain individual or group. According,
to the term the more likely you are subjected to discrimination or are at a
disadvantage in society. For example, if a male is Hispanic or African American,
that individual will be discriminated against. Now, what if that individual is
not heterosexual and is gay, this is another disadvantage in the workplace or
in society. The greater the overlap an individual has the negative the outcomes
when he/she tries to integrate into society.
The course was very informative, and I enjoyed learning about the struggles and upbringings of Latina/o people. It is important to know where you stand and you get to read stories of people going through the situations and how they are able to get ahead, it’s inspiring. Latina/o people are considered to be irrelevant or unimportant in this country, we let people take advantage of us or we are afraid to speak out against these injustices. Therefore, courses like this one are important because they give us a voice and by the end of it you feel a sense of empowerment and pride of where you come from. You get a feeling of belonging and your life is given meaning. For example, in the documentary ''Precious Knowledge'', the students were going through the same situation and they didn’t have an identity.
