If, you’re a minority, you know the struggle to find a well-paying job, owning property or getting an education. The truth is minorities have to work twice as hard or sometimes when three times as hard just to get by in this country. We are people with dreams and aspirations in one day achieving a better life for future generations to come. Women have it the worst because in this country women are considered to be inferior to men; a woman can work in the same position as a man, but still get paid less than the man. If you think that’s bad, minority women have even less privileges than white women, so what is left for minority to do when it comes to employment. Most of these women join a cleaning service, they work long hours and the pay is not any good. These women are taken advantage of and there is no one to speak up for them. At least, White women are able to find cleaner and less physical jobs such as desk work or assistant, it is a better job than scrubbing toilets daily.

Latina/o life is not considered valuable in this society. Yes, we are an important part of the community and economy, but we are mostly thought of as a human wallet because we contribute to a large amount of spending in the economy. Latinas/os don’t have the same opportunities as their white counterpart in this country, for example Miguel came to this country when he was eleven, he learned the language and became a brilliant student and followed all the rules, he was the envy of the school. The problem with Miguel was, he went to school that was overcrowded; Miguel’s neighborhood wasn’t the best either, there are many factors that can lead a person down the wrong path such as drugs, teen pregnancy, and juvenile violence. The course was very informative, and I enjoyed learning about the struggles and upbringings of Latina/o people. It is important to know where you stand and you get to read stories of people going through the situations and how they are able to get ahead, it’s inspiring. Latina/o people are considered to be irrelevant or unimportant in this country, we let people take advantage of us or we are afraid to speak out against these injustices. Therefore, courses like this one are important because they give us a voice and by the end of it you feel a sense of empowerment and pride of where you come from. You get a feeling of belonging and your life is given meaning.
